In the laboratory of Instrumental Analytical Chemistry of the Chemistry course with specializations Chemistry, Biochemistry and Environmental Technology on the Technology Campus Ghent, we use the Steam Distillation Unit type S3 from Behr during the Kjeldahl test. Advantages of this appliance compared to a traditional steam distillation, for which we previously used the complex Parnas set-up, is certainly the simplicity but also safety in use. After a very short explanation by the teacher, the students can work with the device themselves. Proper shielding of steam distillation guarantees that everything can go safely. The steam distillation unit is used by us for the distillation of destructed samples of lentils, beans, beer, waste water samples, etc. prior to the actual determination of the Kjeldahl nitrogen on the sample. At regular intervals, checks are carried out on solutions of ammonium nitrate which show that steam distillation continues to work well. Furthermore, we are very satisfied with the service provided by Anaspec Solutions, which always offers a quick response to our questions and, if necessary, proposes good solutions.
